In the spring of 1984, in the small town of Peace River, Alberta, 18-year-old Carolyn Elaine Pruyser, a student at the University of Alberta, had returned home for the summer. On the evening of May 17, 1984, she spent time with friends watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After the game, she drove a friend home. She was last seen just after midnight at a Mohawk service station in Peace River. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as a Caucasian female with blonde hair and blue eyes, standing 5'3" tall and weighing 130 pounds. She was wearing a blue Esprit jacket, a yellow short-sleeved v-neck blouse with red and yellow detailing, blue jeans, and grey running shoes. The following morning, concern grew when Carolyn had not returned home. Her father discovered her car, a blue 1978 Ford Fairmont, abandoned on a steep embankment on Kaufman Hill Road, an area known as a local hangout spot not far from her parents' residence. Inside the vehicle were her keys and purse, yet Carolyn was nowhere to be found. The driver's side window was down and the doors were unlocked. Investigators found a single boot print on the driver's side door, but there were no other immediate signs of a struggle. The discovery of her abandoned car with her personal belongings still inside led authorities to suspect foul play in her sudden disappearance. The weeks and months that followed were filled with anguish for Carolyn's family and community. Extensive searches were conducted by local residents and police, but they yielded no answers as to her whereabouts. A significant point of interest in the investigation emerged when two hunters reported discovering what appeared to be a fresh grave in a remote area northeast of Manning, approximately 167 kilometers from Peace River. Despite reporting this finding to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on multiple occasions over the years, it remains unclear if the site was ever thoroughly investigated. Over the years, a man has been considered a person of interest in Carolyn's disappearance, though no charges have ever been laid. The case remains an active investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter in the history of Peace River. The official belief by law enforcement is that Carolyn was abducted and murdered, though her remains have never been located.
