In the quiet village of Elora, Ontario, a story of disappearance and unanswered questions began to unfold in the spring of 1992. Deqian Rang, a 28-year-old woman also known as Maria, was last seen on April 20th of that year. At the time, she and her husband were the proprietors of the 'Abacus Restaurant' located just south of the village. The couple, who had married in Beijing in 1984, were known to have a tumultuous relationship, with both having engaged in extramarital affairs. Despite their difficulties, a letter Deqian sent to her family in China in April 1992 expressed her desire to make the marriage work. She had indicated that although they had initiated a legal separation in January, she intended to stay with her husband to help get his restaurant business off the ground. It wasn't until months after she was last seen that friends of Deqian, unable to get in touch with her, took action. After checking with Chinese communities across Canada and the United States to no avail, they reported her missing. This delay in reporting her disappearance added another layer of complexity to the investigation. The police have stated that their extensive investigation has not been able to locate her, and they suspect that foul play was involved in her disappearance. Her passport and landed immigrant card have never been found. Suspicion eventually fell upon Deqian's husband. He was arrested in July of 1993 after a witness reported seeing him with a large suitcase in a wooded area near Elora shortly after his wife vanished. During his trial for second-degree murder in December 1994, the prosecution put forth the theory that Deqian was killed and her body placed in a suitcase. However, the defense argued that the suitcase merely contained clothes that her husband was taking to her. Ultimately, a jury found him not guilty. Following his acquittal, he returned to China. The investigation into Deqian's disappearance has remained open, with detectives even traveling to China, British Columbia, and the United States to interview potential witnesses. Despite these efforts, the case of Deqian Rang remains an unresolved mystery, leaving her loved ones without answers and her whereabouts unknown.
