Ryan John Marcus Shtuka, a 20-year-old man, was living and working in Sun Peaks, British Columbia, when he vanished in the early morning hours of February 17, 2018. Originally from Beaumont, Alberta, he had moved to the resort town for the winter season. On the night he disappeared, Ryan had finished his shift at the ski resort and later joined his roommates for a night out. The group attended a "Silent Disco" event at a local pub before heading to a house party on Burfield Drive, just a short walk from their home. A snowstorm hit the area that night, and temperatures dropped significantly. Ryan was last seen leaving the party at approximately 2:00 a.m., wearing dark jeans, a grey and white shirt, a blue coat, and a burgundy ball cap, with the intention of walking the short distance home. When he failed to show up for his work shift later that day, and with no activity on his social media or cell phone, his friends reported him missing. In the immediate aftermath of Ryan's disappearance, an extensive search was launched. The initial belief was that he may have succumbed to the harsh weather conditions, possibly falling into a gully that was quickly covered by heavy snowfall. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), along with search and rescue teams, utilized a helicopter and a dog team in their efforts. The community of Sun Peaks, though small, rallied together, with hundreds of volunteers from both British Columbia and Alberta joining the search, combing through the village, surrounding forests, and mountain trails. Ryan's family traveled to Sun Peaks to lead and coordinate many of these volunteer search efforts, spending months in the area. Despite these exhaustive searches, which continued as the snow melted in the spring and for years after, no trace of Ryan or any of his belongings has ever been found. The complete absence of any clues has left Ryan's family, friends, and the wider community with a profound sense of loss and a multitude of unanswered questions. The lack of evidence has made it difficult for investigators to determine what happened to him, and the case remains open. While the RCMP has stated there is no evidence to suggest foul play, they have also not ruled it out. The mysterious nature of his disappearance has led to widespread speculation within the community, but no theories have been substantiated. Ryan's family continues to keep his story alive through public awareness campaigns, social media, and annual events in Sun Peaks, holding onto hope that they will one day find answers and bring their son home. The case is an overview of a young man who vanished without a trace from a small resort town, the comprehensive but unsuccessful search efforts, and the enduring pain and uncertainty faced by his loved ones.
