In the coastal community of Les Bergeronnes, Quebec, a sense of concern lingers for Gabriel Simard, a 30-year-old man who vanished into the vastness of the St. Lawrence River. On the evening of March 11, 2025, Gabriel embarked on what should have been a routine task: retrieving his fishing cabin from the water. He set out from the municipal dock in his 16-foot canoe, a familiar vessel against the backdrop of the familiar waterway. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as having a slender build, with short blond hair, blue eyes, and a freckled complexion. He was believed to be wearing a camouflage hunting vest, a grey sweater, a black synthetic toque, and black rubber boots. As the evening progressed, the situation took a perilous turn. At approximately 6:00 p.m., Gabriel managed to make a phone call to his father, his voice carrying a note of distress over the challenging conditions. He explained that the strong winds were preventing him from towing the cabin back to the safety of the shore. An hour later, a second, more urgent call was made. Gabriel asked his father to contact emergency services, as he was unable to fight the current and was being swept out towards the open sea. This was the last time his family heard from him, a final, desperate plea for help against the powerful forces of nature. In the wake of his disappearance, a significant search and rescue operation was launched. The Sûreté du Québec, along with the Canadian Coast Guard, immediately began to scour the waters of the St. Lawrence River. Despite their extensive efforts, which included the use of helicopters, planes, and an icebreaker, their search was hampered by the harsh reality of sub-zero temperatures. The official search was eventually suspended, though the case remains open. The community of Les Bergeronnes was left with unanswered questions and the deep ache of a missing member. The case of Gabriel Simard is a somber reminder of the unforgiving power of the river, a narrative of a man's struggle against the elements that ended in an unsettling silence, leaving his loved ones to grapple with an immeasurable loss and the absence of closure.
