In the autumn of 1977, a 20-year-old woman named Crystal Elizabeth Vanhuuksloot vanished from Toronto, Ontario, leaving behind a mysterious and unsettling case that has endured for decades. Originally from Edmonton, she had traveled to Toronto with a desperate purpose: to secure the bail money for her boyfriend, Stacey Harris, who was incarcerated on a drug charge. Carrying $3,000 in a money belt, she was still short of the $15,000 required for his release. After her legitimate attempts to raise the remaining funds failed, Harris suggested she contact a loan shark he knew, a man by the name of Ian Rosenberg.

Crystal's involvement with Rosenberg took a dark turn. After initially being promised the money, she later informed a friend that the loan had fallen through. Her plan was to fly back to Edmonton the next morning to continue her efforts to raise the bail money. She told her boyfriend during a visit at the Don Jail that Rosenberg would be giving her a ride to Toronto International Airport. However, Crystal never boarded the flight to Edmonton and was never seen or heard from again. When questioned by police, Rosenberg claimed he had dropped her off at the airport as planned.

The mystery deepened significantly seven months after Crystal's disappearance when Ian Rosenberg and his girlfriend were found shot to death in their bed. A friend and business associate of Rosenberg's, James Bass, was arrested and tried for the double murder. During the trial, the Crown prosecutor put forward a theory that the motive for the murders was Bass's fear that Rosenberg was about to inform the police about Bass's involvement in Crystal Vanhuuksloot's disappearance. Despite this, the case against Bass was circumstantial, and he was ultimately found not guilty. No one has ever been convicted in the murders of Rosenberg and his girlfriend, and Crystal Elizabeth Vanhuuksloot has never been found, her case remaining a haunting and unresolved disappearance. The overview of the case reveals a story of a young woman who, in an act of loyalty, became entangled with dangerous individuals, leading to her vanishing and a subsequent double homicide that remains officially unsolved, leaving her loved ones without answers.
