On the afternoon of October 1, 1974, 50-year-old Louis Wesley and his common-law wife, Sheila Trout, departed from Hudson, Ontario, in a 16-foot aluminum boat. Their destination was Chamberlain Narrows on Lac Seul, a large body of water in the Kenora District. Wesley, a First Nations man, stood six feet tall and weighed around 179 pounds. He had short black hair, brown eyes, and a medium build with a dark complexion.
On that autumn day, he was wearing a white and green checkered jacket, green pants, and black boots. The couple was traveling east of McLeans Narrows when an unexpected and tragic event occurred that would forever alter their lives.
According to Sheila Trout, the sole witness, Wesley fell from the boat into the water. She reported that the boat's motor struck him as he fell, and he subsequently disappeared beneath the surface. In the aftermath of this harrowing incident, Trout found herself in a perilous situation; she was unable to restart the boat's motor, leaving her adrift on the vast expanse of Lac Seul. For three days, she drifted until her boat came to rest on an island approximately 9.5 kilometers west of where Wesley had vanished. She was eventually rescued on October 4, 1974.
Despite the rescue of Sheila Trout, the search for Louis Wesley yielded no results. Extensive efforts to locate him were unsuccessful, and his body has never been recovered. The official belief is that he drowned in the boating accident. The case of Louis Wesley is a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the vast Canadian wilderness and the heartbreak that ensues when a loved one is lost without a trace.
