In the spring of 2022, a three-year-old girl named Sofia Abigail Caballero Huete embarked on a long and perilous journey with her mother and uncle. The family, originally from Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua, was hoping to reach the United States and reunite with Sofia's father, who had migrated to Wisconsin earlier that year. Driven by the lack of employment opportunities in their home country, Sofia's mother, Irma Yaritza Huete, made the difficult decision to travel north. On the night of May 17, 2022, young Sofia, a Hispanic female with black hair and brown eyes, was last seen near Rio Bravo, Texas. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a pink shirt, black leggings, and pink and black sneakers, with her hair in two pink ponytail holders. The family was part of a large group of migrants attempting to cross the treacherous waters of the Rio Grande. It was around 11:00 p.m. when the group formed a human chain to navigate the river. Sofia was being carried on her uncle's shoulders as her mother walked behind them. Tragically, just a short distance from the American shore, her uncle lost his footing, and both he and Sofia were swept into the powerful current, along with Sofia's mother. While her uncle managed to make it to the other side, the river separated mother and daughter. The following day, the heartbreaking discovery of Irma's body was made; she had drowned, and inside her pockets were her daughter's identification documents. In the wake of this tragedy, a desperate search for Sofia began. Various organizations, including the Texas Nicaraguan Community and the Search Commission of the State of Coahuila de Zaragoza, joined the effort to find the missing child. There have been unconfirmed reports from other migrants who were present that night, suggesting that Sofia was pulled from the water alive by other individuals. This has led to speculation that she could have been a victim of human trafficking, and some authorities and activists maintain hope that she may still be alive. The case of Sofia Abigail Caballero Huete is a poignant example of the dangers faced by migrant families. Despite the passage of time, her case remains unsolved, leaving her family with unanswered questions and an enduring hope of one day finding their little girl.
