On March 3, 1989, 27-year-old Michael Wayne Wheeler and three other men went missing in a boating accident in the Shelikof Strait, near Kodiak, Alaska. Wheeler was aboard the 108-foot steel longline halibut fishing vessel, the Ocean Hope II, which is presumed to have sunk. The last communication from the vessel was on the evening of March 2, 1989, as it was en route to seek shelter in Portage Bay.
