On February 14, 1985, Ray A. Basel, a 42-year-old crewman, and four other men disappeared from Kodiak, Alaska, after the fishing vessel they were on was reported missing. The 83-foot vessel, named the "Alert," was last seen in the Shelikof Straits, navigating between Uganik Bay and Alitak Bay. Also on board were Shawn Heaney, 24, Melvin Wick, 41, who was the captain, Paul Rowe, and Sveinn Adalsteinsson.
