In the spring of 1987, Wendy Aughe, a 29-year-old beauty school student and devoted mother of two young children, disappeared from her home in Bellingham, Washington. Her last known sighting was on April 25, 1987, as she left a local restaurant. Friends and family described her as a responsible and caring mother, and it was highly uncharacteristic of her to leave without any warning or communication. Her sudden absence raised immediate concern, prompting a missing person report when she failed to pick up her eight-year-old daughter. The initial stages of the investigation into her disappearance would soon uncover disturbing evidence suggesting a violent and tragic turn of events. The investigation quickly focused on a man Wendy had recently met, a drifter who initially identified himself as Mike Johnson but was later identified as Darren Dee O'Neall. Wendy had told classmates at the beauty school that she had a date with a man in a three-piece suit she had met at the La Paloma restaurant. She was last seen with O'Neall, who was a bartender at the same restaurant. A week after she vanished, Wendy's 1972 Ford Torino was discovered abandoned in Eugene, Oregon, with O'Neall's fingerprints inside. Back in Bellingham, a search of Wendy's apartment revealed a scene of a violent struggle. Investigators found pools of blood, blood-soaked bedsheets, and other evidence that pointed to a violent encounter. O'Neall disappeared after his second day of work at the restaurant, taking money from the cash register and liquor. He was even photographed by customs authorities driving Wendy's car into Canada. For decades, Wendy's case remained a painful and unresolved mystery for her family, though foul play was strongly suspected. Her body was never found, and despite the compelling circumstantial evidence, there was not enough to charge O'Neall in her disappearance. The case grew cold but was never forgotten by investigators. A significant breakthrough came years later with advancements in DNA technology. In 2015, evidence collected from Wendy's apartment in 1987 was re-examined, and a DNA profile was developed from semen found on her bedsheet. This profile was a match to Darren Dee O'Neall. This critical piece of evidence rejuvenated the investigation, and in October 2022, O'Neall was charged with the second-degree murder of Wendy Aughe. In March 2023, he was extradited from Oregon, where he was incarcerated for other violent crimes, to face the charges in Washington, marking a pivotal moment in the 35-year-long quest for justice for Wendy. The case against O'Neall represents the culmination of decades of police work, spanning generations of detectives who refused to give up on finding answers for Wendy's loved ones.
