On February 14, 1985, 24-year-old Shawn Thomas Heaney, a crewman on the fishing vessel *Alert*, was reported missing off the coast of Kodiak, Alaska. Heaney, along with four other crew members—Ray Basel, Melvin Wick, Paul Rowe, and Sveinn Adalsteinsson—vanished with the ship. The vessel, an 83-foot boat, was last seen in the Shelikof Strait, reportedly heading for the shelter of Bumble Bay.
