On the evening of January 14, 2022, 30-year-old Richie T. Aaron Jr. was traveling home to Independence, Missouri, on an Amtrak train when he was shot while the train was stopped at the Lee’s Summit station. The shooter fled the train at Lee’s Summit; the train continued to Independence where Aaron was given medical aid but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified 21-year-old Marquise L. Webb of Kansas City as the shooter. Webb reportedly carjacked a vehicle near the Lee’s Summit station and fled to Kansas City. Two weeks later officers located him at a residence; a standoff followed during which Webb at one point aimed a handgun at officers before surrendering and being arrested.

Webb was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and vehicle hijacking; he ultimately pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and vehicle hijacking and received a 28-year prison sentence. Aaron’s family sued Amtrak for negligent security and delayed medical assistance; a federal jury found Amtrak 90% liable and awarded nearly $159 million in compensatory and punitive damages.

Did anyone on the train or at the Lee’s Summit station see anything that could shed more light on how the shooting unfolded?
