On July 25, 2015, 34-year-old Patrick Marchlewski was shot and killed at Rockford Beach Park in House Springs, Jefferson County, Missouri. Marchlewski had been at the public recreation area that afternoon with friends; the group’s roughhousing and arguing drew the attention of another park visitor who was there with his wife and children. According to friends, the visitor approached to ask if there was a problem, the interaction escalated, and the man allegedly brandished a firearm.

Jeff Jones, a friend of Marchlewski’s, said the group told the man there was no issue and believed the situation had de-escalated as they left. Prosecutors say the man later pulled his vehicle up next to Marchlewski in the parking lot and fired, fatally wounding him. Detectives reported there was no physical altercation before the shooting. The shooter told investigators Marchlewski approached his vehicle in a way that made him fear for his life and that he fired in self-defense.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department arrested and booked the shooter on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter, but the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office declined to file formal charges, citing Missouri’s self-defense laws and the shooter’s claim of reasonable fear. Marchlewski’s friends strongly disputed that account and maintained the shooter was the aggressor. Does anyone have additional details about what happened at the park that afternoon or about witnesses who were present?
