Travis Antonio Draper, a 41-year-old Black man, was shot and killed in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on August 5, 2021, in what authorities described as a road rage incident. Draper, a married father of three, was on his way to work at BMW and speaking with his wife when a verbal dispute at a red light escalated as both drivers continued onto Highway 295.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, Draper pursued the other driver, pulled alongside him and, the office says, pointed a gun. The other driver, described as a white man who has not been publicly identified, fired one shot that fatally wounded Draper, then left the scene and later told investigators he had not known his bullet struck anyone. Sheriff Chuck Wright announced the shooting met South Carolina’s Stand Your Ground criteria and no charges were filed; the sheriff said evidence indicated Draper was the aggressor.
Draper’s family retained attorney Bakari Sellers and publicly contested the sheriff’s findings, demanded a fuller investigation by SLED and sought release of surveillance video; protests followed. What additional evidence, if any, would clarify the sequence of events that morning?
