A spring afternoon in Walterboro ended in tragedy when 17-year-old Donaisha Kelly was fatally shot on April 22, 2020. She was driving near the intersection of Francis and Savage streets when a single bullet struck her; she continued several blocks before the car stopped in a yard on Francis Street. Emergency crews found her unresponsive and she died at the scene. A 15-year-old male passenger was also shot, fled the scene, and was taken to Colleton Medical Center by a private vehicle; other teens in the car were uninjured.

Two suspects were arrested within about thirty minutes of the shooting. One was identified as Joseph Mack Jr., who was charged with murder and denied bond. The second was a juvenile charged with murder and set to be tried as an adult. Known as DeeDee, Kelly attended Colleton County High School, was four credits shy of graduating, worked at Wendy’s, and hoped to become a pediatrician. If anyone knew Donaisha or has information about the shooting, please share what you know.
