Karson Bailey Whitesell was 19 when she was shot and killed while working at The Peach Stand in Fort Mill, South Carolina, on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. The shooting occurred in the late afternoon when a man entered the market and opened fire; witnesses described a scene of confusion and terror as gunshots rang out. Whitesell was struck by multiple bullets from a handgun and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police described the attack as random. The shooter remained at the location and was taken into custody minutes after officers arrived. Investigators reported no known connection between Karson and the suspect. The gun used in the shooting had been purchased about an hour before the attack.

Karson’s family later created Karson’s Kompassion Project in her memory, and the community honored her by naming the intersection where The Peach Stand sits the Karson Bailey Whitesell Memorial Intersection. Did anyone who knew Karson or was in Fort Mill that afternoon see something that could help clarify what happened?
