Annette Riley, a 44-year-old mother of three and a grandmother, was shot and killed in her front yard in Gaston, South Carolina, on October 11, 2017, after a verbal dispute escalated to violence. The shooter was identified as Chesnee Labri Mattress, then 25, a friend of one of Riley’s daughters who had been at the residence that day. Mattress fired multiple shots into a crowd in the yard, fatally striking Riley.
A witness called 911 and identified Mattress at the scene; several other witnesses and deputies confirmed that identification. Investigators executed a search warrant at Mattress’s home and recovered a .40-caliber pistol later forensically linked to the shooting. Mattress admitted to using the pistol in the killing. In the days afterward, four others — Amaria Regina Hamm, Ashley Danielle Riley, Treshawn Alexander, and Monyell Deshea Fulton — were arrested and charged with murder; Hamm and Mattress faced additional drug charges related to a later warrant.
Riley is remembered as a loving mother and proud grandmother. Did anyone in the Gaston area have information about the relationships between those involved or the events that led up to the shooting?
