Atu Williams was 18 when he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on the evening of Wednesday, October 12, 2016. The shooting occurred in the 1100 block of Mr. Joe White Avenue; Williams was taken to Conway Medical Center and pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.

A witness who was with Williams said the gun discharged as Williams was getting out of a vehicle while removing a firearm from his waistband, and described the shooting as an accidental, self-inflicted injury. Two other people reportedly transported him to the hospital. Myrtle Beach police opened an investigation and examined the witness account; no official ruling on manner of death or any charges has been reported since the incident. Funeral services were held the following week at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
