Taizaun Dewitt was 14 when he was shot and killed in Longs, South Carolina, on a Friday evening in early May 2015. Neighbors reported hearing gunfire on Pint Circle; a witness driving home from work found him staggering down a residence’s stairs and collapsing in the street. He was taken to Seacoast Medical Center in Little River but was pronounced dead after suffering a gunshot wound just below his left eye. Horry County Police located the shooting scene at 2880 Collins Circle and treated the death as a homicide amid a recent string of violence in the Longs area.

In the days after the killing, investigators named 21-year-old Rodrez Daquell Stanley of Longs as a person of interest. Stanley turned himself in on an unrelated warrant, and by the following Wednesday Horry County Police had charged him with Dewitt’s murder; jail records showed him held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
