Brian Raviv Bregman, 43, a lawyer and reserve police officer, was found shot to death inside his home and law office on Main Street in Laurel on February 3, 2021. Police described the killing as a targeted home invasion and robbery; Bregman sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators say the plot began on the night of January 30, 2021, when 23-year-old Marie Nancy Hassan was invited to Bregman’s residence. Authorities allege Hassan unlocked a door to admit accomplices who entered to commit the robbery. Security footage from the apartment reportedly captured key moments.

In mid-February 2021, Hassan and 21-year-old Caleb Rinwi Gonga of Lanham were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and home invasion; police identified Gonga as the suspected shooter. In March 2021, 19-year-olds Fabian Tinsley and Sam Mofor were arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder and home invasion, and 20-year-old Michael Phelps was charged as an accessory after the fact for allegedly helping dispose of evidence. Police have said the crime was not random.
