Devonta Fagans was 26 when he was shot in the parking lot of the Parkside Apartments on the 500 block of Emory Court in Salisbury, Maryland. Officers responded to reports of a shooting on the evening of Friday, January 29, 2021, and emergency medical services transported Fagans to TidalHealth Hospital, where he died in the early hours of Saturday, January 30, 2021. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsy.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit took over the probe at the Salisbury Police Department’s request. Investigators identified 28-year-old Levonte Javar Martin of Crisfield as a suspect and arrested him on February 3, 2021. Authorities allege Martin traveled to the Parkside Apartments, lay in wait, then ambushed Fagans as he exited his vehicle, firing multiple shots before fleeing to arrange transportation back to Crisfield. Martin was charged with first- and second-degree murder and later convicted after a three-day jury trial; the State’s Attorney’s Office indicated it intended to seek life without parole.
If anyone knew Devonta or has information about the events that night, please come forward.
