On the evening of April 16, 2016, 22-year-old Carl Patrick Marshall was attending a cookout in the 5300 block of Vienna Drive in Clinton, Maryland, when he was struck by a single gunshot. Officers responding to a call about 9:50 p.m. found Marshall in the street; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly focused on 25-year-old Antonio Barnett of Waldorf. Evidence presented at trial established Barnett fired the fatal shot, though prosecutors did not establish a clear motive and the self-defense claim was not accepted by the jury. Jurors convicted Barnett of involuntary manslaughter, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a regulated firearm; the court later imposed an aggregate sentence of 35 years in prison.
Does anyone who attended that cookout or was in the neighborhood that night have details that could shed light on what led to the shooting?
