Duane Sheldon Hopkins Jr. was 16 and a sophomore at Suitland High School when he was killed in Temple Hills, Maryland. On the evening of Monday, February 2, 2009, residents later recalled hearing a rapid series of gunshots — described as five shots, a pause, then three more — between about 7:30 and 8 p.m. That night no one reported the gunfire to police.
The next morning, around 7 a.m., Duane was found lying in the yard of a home on Gaither Street, a few blocks from his family’s residence on 20th Place. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was still clutching his cellphone when officers arrived. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed residents but did not immediately identify a suspect or a motive.
Who in the area that night might remember unusual activity or someone leaving the neighborhood after the shots were heard?
