John L. Carney, 23, of LeRoy, New York, died on November 9, 2018, after a 9mm semi-automatic Ruger that legally belonged to him was discharged during a party inside a barn on Byron Holley Road in the town of Byron. Six or seven other people were present when the firearm went off. Investigators from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, after speaking with witnesses and consulting the Monroe County Medical Examiner and the Genesee County District Attorney, determined the shooting resulted from horseplay and careless handling and ruled the death accidental. Carney was pronounced dead at the scene; several attendees were questioned but authorities found no evidence of foul play or intentional harm, and no arrests were made. He is remembered by the community as an avid hunter.
Does anyone who was at that gathering or knew John have information about what happened in the moments before the firearm was discharged?
