Ralph Mendez, 55, was shot and killed inside his home on G Street in Wheatland, California, in the early hours of May 12, 2021. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wheatland police identified 41-year-old Rory Banks as the primary suspect and arrested him shortly after the shooting. Investigators say Banks broke into Mendez’s home and fatally shot him; the two men did not know each other personally. Police also found two pipe bombs at Banks’ residence, forcing an evacuation of the neighborhood. Mendez’s status as a registered sex offender from a 2009 conviction for lewd acts with a minor under 14 has been reported, and Banks’ wife told authorities he had grown paranoid and was influenced by conspiracy theories, including QAnon; police said Banks harbored a grudge against Mendez but stated motive remained under investigation.

Does anyone have information about either man or about activity in that neighborhood around May 12, 2021?
