Valeria Villagomez was 21 and a student at San Francisco State University when she was fatally shot at her Outer Sunset home on October 24, 2019. The shooting occurred in the afternoon; responding officers found her ex-boyfriend, Jose Dejesus Rodriguez, at the scene. He had made the 911 call but gave no information about the shooting, and a gun was recovered nearby.

Investigators documented a pattern of violent, controlling, and jealous behavior by Rodriguez toward Villagomez, details that appeared in her journal and were supported by friends’ testimony. Rodriguez was arrested the day of the killing and charged with murder, domestic violence with a firearm, and attempting to remove an officer’s handgun. He was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter and resisting an officer with removal or attempted removal of a weapon and sentenced.

The case drew attention to the range of harms caused by abusive relationships and to the need for better recognition and intervention. If anyone knew Valeria, her routines, or had information about her relationship, please share what you know.
