On the evening of August 1, 2018, 29-year-old Coalinga resident Eric Colin was shot and killed while walking near Warthan Avenue and East Sacramento Avenue. The shooting happened at about 9:00 PM when an unknown assailant fired multiple rounds, striking Colin several times. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Hanford and later died of his wounds.

The Coalinga Police Department initially handled the case and then asked the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office to take over the homicide investigation. Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit interviewed witnesses and collected evidence; investigators have said the shooting might have been gang-related but that motive has not been confirmed. No arrests have been announced and the case remains open. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers.
