Vanessa Oviedo, a 27-year-old mother of four from Visalia, California, was killed on November 18, 2016. She was 35 weeks pregnant when someone fired into the car where she was sitting; she was shot twice in the head and later died at Kaweah Delta Medical Center. The boyfriend driving the car was the intended target and was shot in the leg; he drove to the hospital where doctors performed an emergency C-section. The infant survived and was reported to be healthy.
Investigators describe the shooting as gang-related and say Vanessa was an innocent bystander. As of this writing no arrests have been announced. The Visalia Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward, and a $5,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Vanessa’s family has held vigils and spoken publicly, describing her as a loving, caring person whose death left a large void for her children and relatives.
