I was doing some reading on Denise Berry's case today, and it got me thinking about the role of bystanders in such terrifying scenarios. Imagine being the Hawthorne police officer who Denise approached for help. It must have been an overwhelming moment, trying to protect both her and her son while also confronting an armed suspect. I can't even begin to comprehend the pressure and split-second decisions that officer had to make. It's tragic to think that despite his efforts, Denise lost her life.
I'm wondering if there are any protocols or additional training for officers in situations where they have to manage so many variables at once. Has anyone here read about changes in police training after incidents like this? My heart goes out to Denise’s family, especially her son, who had to witness and endure such trauma at such a young age. Let's continue to honor Denise by discussing ways to prevent tragedies like this in the future.
