I recently came across Lee Massey Smith Jr.'s case while reading about the changes in juvenile justice legislation, and I just can’t stop thinking about his family. I can't imagine the pain his loved ones have gone through since that tragic day at the bus stop in 2004. They’ve had to navigate so many legal twists and turns over the years, especially with the changes in the laws and the subsequent release of one of the individuals involved.
The fact that someone can be tried as an adult, convicted, and then have their sentence adjusted years later must be so difficult for the victim's family to process. While I understand the importance of rehabilitating juveniles, I think we also need to consider what this means for families like Smith’s. It would be interesting to know how his loved ones have been coping and what their thoughts are on these legal reforms.
It’s just a lot to take in, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this senseless act of violence. I hope Smith’s family has a strong support system around them to help carry them through these trying times.
