Elizabeth Lizzie Harman Lyman was an 81-year-old retired piano teacher who was murdered in Bloomington, California, on May 26, 1980. Born September 17, 1898, in Dunkirk, New York, Lizzie had spent much of her life teaching piano and lived alone at the time of the attack.
On the night of the murder Stephen Anderson, who had escaped from Utah State Prison, broke into Lyman’s home in the early hours and brutally assaulted her, resulting in her death. Anderson was identified quickly as the prime suspect because of his escape and criminal history; multiple agencies worked together to locate him. He was captured, charged with Lyman’s murder, convicted and sentenced to death.
How well did the Bloomington community remember Lizzie Lyman and her work as a piano teacher?
