Tana Smith was 32 when she was shot and killed at a bus stop on January 28, 1974, at Geary Boulevard and Divisadero Street in San Francisco. The assailant used a .32 caliber firearm and fled on foot. Eyewitnesses later identified the perpetrator as J.C. Simon, who was reported to be part of a group called the Death Angels, linked to the Zebra murders.
The Zebra killings were a series of racially motivated attacks in San Francisco between 1973 and 1974 that targeted white victims. Another victim that day, 69-year-old Vincent Wollin, was shot and killed about ten minutes later roughly eight blocks away. Four men—Manuel Moore, Larry Green, Jessie Lee Cooks, and J.C. Simon—were arrested, tried, convicted of multiple counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy, and sentenced to life imprisonment after testimony from a warehouse employee who received immunity and entered witness protection with his family.
Does anyone have memories of that bus stop or information about Tana Smith that might help add to the record?
