Jeramyah Wyatt was 12 when he died from a gunshot to the head at his family home in Lady Lake, Florida. The shooting occurred on August 31, 2020, after Jeramyah and his younger siblings spent the night in the master bedroom while their parents and a one-month-old infant were downstairs. A loaded Diamondback assault rifle stored under the bed without a case discharged; the parents heard a loud bang and the 10-year-old daughter’s screams. Emergency medical services pronounced Jeramyah dead at the scene.

Prosecutors charged Jeramyah’s father, Christopher Wyatt, with aggravated manslaughter of a child under 16. The criminal filing noted an earlier episode in which Jeramyah had armed himself with his father’s shotgun while home alone with siblings, and that Christopher Wyatt had previously been counseled on safe firearm storage and had signed a form acknowledging Florida’s storage requirements.

Does anyone have information about the home’s storage practices or witnessed events from that night that could shed light on how the rifle came to be accessible?
