Sally Kaufmann-Ruff, 64, was found dead in her Dunnellon, Florida, home on January 30, 2018. The death was initially reported as the result of a home invasion, but investigators later identified inconsistencies at the scene that did not match an intruder narrative and concluded the scene had been staged.

David W. Romig, 52, who lived with Kaufmann-Ruff, became the primary suspect. He was arrested and charged with homicide, making a false report, and tampering with evidence after he accidentally sent text messages to a detective in which he said he feared he was going to be arrested and was confused about the night’s events. Romig admitted he staged the scene and told investigators he experienced blackouts, heard voices, and had an out-of-body sensation in which he felt like he wrestled with himself and the gun discharged, killing Kaufmann-Ruff. He was the sole beneficiary of her will.

Romig was held without bond and placed on suicide watch at the Marion County Jail; a court hearing was set for March 20, 2018. Does anyone have information about Sally’s life in Dunnellon or details that could help clarify what happened that night?
