Deputy Sheriff Lonny Lee Lindsey, 26, was killed on September 17, 1996, in Bonifay, Florida, after responding to a robbery call while on sick leave. He had served with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office for five years. Arriving about half a mile from his home, he stopped a truck and was checking its tag when he made his last radio transmission reporting shots fired.
Deputy Lindsey was mortally wounded by a shot from a .30 caliber rifle but managed to return fire and wounded both suspects. The suspects were captured soon afterward and later tried and convicted of murder. One accomplice’s death sentence was later commuted to life; the shooter received a life sentence. He left behind a wife and two young children, and the department and community mourned his death.
What information do readers who knew Deputy Lindsey or his family have that could shed light on the events of that night?
