On August 30, 2022, deputies from the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Boston, Georgia, residence after reports of a possible murder. Investigators found blood in the basement and drag marks leading outside, but the homeowner, Andrew Hill, could not be located that night. A witness later told police two men in ski masks entered the basement, confronted Hill, demanded to know the whereabouts of one man’s son, and shot Hill after an argument. The witness identified the men after they removed their masks and threatened him. Hill’s body was found the next day in neighboring Brooks County.

Investigators arrested 55-year-old Anthony Tony Hires and his 24-year-old son Anthony Seth Hires II; authorities said the motive was revenge linked to the July 18, 2022, disappearance of Tony Hires’s son Andrue Trent Hires. Officials reported no evidence connecting Hill to Trent’s disappearance. Two other relatives, Jeffrey Hiers and Johnny Wayne Hires, were charged with minor offenses related to the incident.
