In the quiet town of Manlius, New York, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of a compassionate and dedicated young woman. Leah Beth An Ni McIrwin, a 23-year-old female, was found deceased in her apartment on April 26, 2021. Born in the Anhui Province of China, she had grown into a loving individual who dedicated her career to helping others as a social worker. Her family and friends remembered her for her many kindnesses and her tender and caring nature.
Concern arose when Leah failed to appear for her job as a case manager at Helio Health in Syracuse. This uncharacteristic absence prompted her family to report her missing. Responding to the call, officers from the Manlius Police Department made a grim discovery at her residence. Inside, they found Leah and her boyfriend, Oscar Sullivan, both deceased. The cause of death for both was determined to be gunshot wounds, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office officially ruled Leah's death a homicide.
An extensive investigation was launched by the Manlius Police Department, with assistance from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office and the Onondaga County Center for Forensic Science. The investigation concluded that on the morning of April 25, 2021, Oscar Sullivan shot and killed Leah McIrwin. Later that same day, he took his own life. With this determination, the case was classified as a murder-suicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Leah McIrwin and Oscar Sullivan was officially closed on August 9, 2021. Authorities confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to the community and that Sullivan was the sole individual responsible for Leah’s death. No arrests were made, and no other suspects were sought in connection with this tragic event that ended the promising life of a young woman devoted to social work.
