On a Friday afternoon just after Christmas 2012, 18-year-old Monday Griffin was shot in Penn North, Baltimore. Griffin, a Black male who lived on the 1100 block of Bolton Street, was among two people fired on shortly before 2:07 p.m. on December 28 when multiple unknown suspects came out of an alley on the 2500 block of Woodbrook Avenue and began shooting.

Griffin was struck in the chest and ran from the scene before being found a short distance away on the 1500 block of Retreat Street. He was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m. The other victim, a 31-year-old man, suffered a non-life-threatening leg wound. Homicide detectives opened an investigation, and authorities released Griffin’s name publicly on December 31. As of December 2012, the shooters were described only as multiple unknown individuals and no arrests had been announced.
