On a Friday afternoon just after Christmas, the life of a Baltimore teenager was cut short by gunfire. Monday Griffin, an 18-year-old Black male who lived on the 1100 block of Bolton Street, was in the Penn North neighborhood on December 28, 2012, when violence suddenly erupted.
Shortly before 2:07 p.m., multiple unknown suspects emerged from an alley on the 2500 block of Woodbrook Avenue and began shooting. The attack was a double-shooting, injuring two people. Griffin was struck in the chest, receiving a fatal wound. A second victim, a 31-year-old man, was shot in the leg but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
After being shot, Griffin ran from the scene. He was found a short distance away on the 1500 block of Retreat Street. Emergency responders transported him to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but his injury was too severe.
He was pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m.
Baltimore police homicide detectives began an investigation into the shooting. A few days later, on Monday, December 31, authorities publicly released Monday Griffin's name as the victim. The suspects were described only as multiple unknown individuals who came out of an alley. As of December 2012, the case remained unsolved, and no arrests had been announced in connection with the murder of Monday Griffin.
