On May 29, 2020, just after midnight in Macon, Georgia, 60-year-old Stacey Van Battle was shot and killed during a violent incident at a residence on Fair Street that also left 49-year-old Derrick Howard dead. Witnesses reported an argument between two men, after which a third man, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Whitehead, allegedly approached with a firearm and opened fire, striking both victims. Van Battle was pronounced dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds; Howard was transported to a hospital after CPR but died shortly after arrival.

Bibb County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Whitehead later that same day and charged him with two counts of murder; he was also held on a separate state probation violation and was booked into the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center without bond.
