An afternoon domestic dispute in March 2019 in Cairo, Georgia, ended with the fatal shooting of 86-year-old Jimmy Lee Bryant in the yard of his home on MLK Jr. Drive. Bryant was shot and later died of his wounds. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted the Cairo Police Department and, after interviewing witnesses at the scene, investigators described the killing as tied to an ongoing domestic issue that escalated into violence.
Law enforcement located and arrested a suspect shortly afterward in the Whigham area. Derrick Clark, 31, of Donalsonville, was taken into custody by Grady County deputies and booked into the Grady County Jail; he was charged with felony murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The investigation remained active and authorities sought anyone with additional information as the case was prepared for prosecution.
If anyone has information about what led to the confrontation or was present that day, please share details with investigators.
