Ten-year-old Taylor Marie Jowers was killed in Waycross, Georgia, on Friday, April 4, 2014, in what authorities described as a tragic accident at her Jana Lane home. Taylor, a fifth grader at Wacona Elementary School and a lifelong Waycross resident, was with an older male relative who was also a minor. Investigators say Taylor asked to hold a 12-gauge shotgun; the relative had attempted to ensure the firearm was not loaded when it discharged, fatally wounding her. He ran to a neighbor to call for help.

Officials found several firearms in the house and learned Taylor’s father, 33-year-old Joshua Jowers, was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing guns. Jowers was arrested on Sunday, April 6, 2014, and charged with possession of firearms by a convicted felon. Authorities said the relative who was holding the shotgun was not expected to face charges and an autopsy was scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab.
