Sergio Berrios, a 42-year-old man of Puerto Rican descent, was shot to death on October 3, 2022, in Waukegan, Illinois. Officers responded to a shots-fired call just after midnight and found Berrios seated in a vehicle parked in a driveway on Chestnut Street; an autopsy confirmed he died of multiple gunshot wounds. Over 20 shell casings at the scene were reported, and investigators described the attack as targeted rather than random.

Charging documents filed in the investigation named 24-year-old Jamonte J. Davis of Zion on a first-degree murder charge; two cell phones belonging to Davis were recovered at the scene. Surveillance showed a gray Dodge Charger stolen from Chicago arrive as two people exited and fired into Berrios’ car, and one of the suspects dropped a cell phone while approaching the vehicle. Investigators say Davis had been in contact with 45-year-old William Fillyaw of North Chicago in the hours before the shooting; Fillyaw was also charged in connection with the death and both men faced federal arson-related charges after the Charger was later found burned.

The motive has not been established. If anyone knew Sergio, saw the gray Charger, or has information about the events on Chestnut Street the night of October 3, 2022, contact the Waukegan Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
