Nhirobi Hakeem Dewey, 21, was fatally shot on the morning of March 2, 2018, in the area of Maine Street in Morgan City, Louisiana. Officers found him with a single gunshot wound; he died at the scene. The shooting arose from a narcotics transaction that escalated into an attempted robbery.
Police say Dewey and another man, Nyjul Hillebrandt, were meeting with Dasmine Miller and Brian Mitchell when Dewey allegedly produced a handgun and attempted to rob Miller and Mitchell. Miller, 18 at the time, reportedly drew a firearm and shot Dewey, then continued firing and wounded Hillebrandt. Witnesses led investigators to a hotel on Brashear Avenue, where Miller and Mitchell were located; Hillebrandt was later found at a Terrebonne Parish hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.
Searches turned up suspected weapons, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Miller was arrested on manslaughter, attempted second-degree murder and multiple drug and weapons charges; Mitchell was charged as a principal to manslaughter and with obstruction and drug offenses; Hillebrandt faces theft and obstruction counts. Did anyone in the area see the men before the shooting or have information about the meeting that led to it?
