On the morning of July 17, 2016, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Corporal Nicholas ’Nick’ Tullier, then 41, was shot while responding to a report of a man armed with a rifle. The gunman, identified as Gavin Long of Kansas City, Missouri, targeted law enforcement in an ambush that also killed Baton Rouge Police Officers Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald and East Baton Rouge Parish Deputy Brad Garafola. Tullier suffered gunshot wounds to the head, shoulder, and abdomen and was given a grim prognosis but survived the initial attack.
Tullier served the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office for 18 years. His father, James Tullier, publicly chronicled his son’s long recovery, as Nicholas endured numerous medical procedures and therapies and fought through repeated setbacks. The shooting left lasting injuries and profoundly affected his family and the Baton Rouge community.
If anyone knew Nicholas, his service, or the circumstances that morning, please share information or memories that could help preserve his story.
