Leroy Quinn, a 27-year-old African American man from Jacksonville, North Carolina, was shot and killed at his apartment on November 16, 2018 after an argument over a $20 debt. Malcolm Lambert had loaned Quinn the money about a week earlier; when Lambert demanded repayment and Quinn refused, Quinn closed his front door. Lambert returned with four other people and fired four shots into the apartment. One bullet struck Quinn in the heart; his mother Shirley Quinn found his body in the living room about two hours later.
The family struggled with the emotional and financial fallout; Shirley Quinn’s victim impact statement conveyed both a desire for justice and forgiveness, and the funeral cost was reported as $4,336.65. The district attorney called the killing absurd and noted how common such violent disputes can be. Was anyone living in the complex that night willing to come forward with what they saw or heard?
