Zetavius Robins, a 21-year-old African American man from Lufkin, Texas, was shot and killed on March 9, 2022, after a brief verbal altercation at a Sonic restaurant in Lufkin. The confrontation involved 20-year-old Ishmael Muhammad of Corrigan, Texas. Robins was shot as he tried to leave the parking lot in his vehicle and then crashed into a building across the street. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died.
Investigators initially considered whether a second shooter was involved but later identified Muhammad as the sole perpetrator. Muhammad was stopped shortly after the shooting during a traffic stop by a Department of Public Safety trooper who had received a description of the suspect vehicle; he was taken into custody without incident and booked in the Angelina County Jail. In addition to a murder charge, he faced aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon charges. Police said the shooting did not appear random and stemmed from the altercation between the two men.
Robins’ family and friends described him as a young man with a promising future; the community mourned his loss. If anyone witnessed the shooting at the Sonic that night or has additional information, please come forward.
