Jose Mario Luna III, a 25-year-old Hispanic man from Laredo, Texas, was fatally shot on February 13, 2022. He was one of three young men killed in a triple shooting outside TKO Sports Café at about 1:58 a.m.; the other victims named were Gilberto de la Torre, 21, and Cesar Samuel Escobar, 21, who was taken to Doctors Hospital and later died.

The shooter was identified as 25-year-old Joe Manuel Martinez. Martinez was originally charged with three counts of murder but the charges were later reduced to manslaughter after a self-defense argument by his attorneys. The reduction and subsequent plea deal prompted strong objections from Luna’s family, who publicly criticized the Webb County District Attorney’s Office and said the outcome did not deliver justice. Martinez received a 15-year sentence on each manslaughter count, to be served concurrently.
