Monice Landrio, 41, of Beaumont, Texas, was shot and killed on April 19, 2020 at the Florida Park Apartments while trying to break up a large fight involving juveniles. Witnesses said Landrio fired a round to try to disperse the confrontation and that a 15-year-old boy then fired multiple rounds, striking her several times. The teen fled but was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
In December 2024 a Jefferson County 60th District Civil Court judge found the apartment complex owners liable for Landrio’s death, citing inadequate security, and ordered the owners to pay $67 million in damages to the family for mental anguish, loss of companionship, and loss of parental consortium; the complex reportedly lacked insurance and the family is unlikely to collect the full award. Landrio was remembered as kind-hearted and the founder of her own taxi cab service.
