Sam Phillip Smith, 28, was shot and killed on January 16, 2017, in the parking lot of a Kroger in Bedford, Texas. The shooting occurred just after 5 p.m. while Smith was talking with another man about a door ding to the other man’s vehicle. The conversation escalated and both men said they were armed; the man sitting in his vehicle fired after believing Smith was reaching for a gun. Smith was not armed. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
The suspect held a handgun license, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, and was later released from jail pending further investigation. Smith left behind his wife, Alishia, and two daughters, Samantha and Catherine, the latter due the following month. A fundraiser was organized to help cover funeral costs and the family’s immediate needs.
If anyone witnessed the shooting or knew Sam and his family, please share what you remember or any information that could help clarify what happened.
